What does Eco-label Certification mean?

In 2004, an assessment of the primary environmental impacts of NMP products was undertaken by the Australian Environmental Labelling Association Inc. in conformance to international environmental labelling standards - ISO 14 020. NMP products were assessed against Standard AELA 13-2004 Architectural (Protective) Coatings. The standard assesses: fitness for purpose; VOC levels; Titanium Dioxide content; glycol ether content; heavy metal content; carcinogenic substances content; product packaging (NMP products are transported and retailed in recyclable plastic and tin packaging); use of ozone-depleting substances; and hydrocarbon solvents content.

National Maintenance Products (NMP) Pty Ltd is the first protective coatings manufacturer to be awarded the Good Environmental Choice Label under the Australian Eco-label Program.

"NMP Pty Ltd is an example of a coating manufacturer leading the design and implementation of quality, environmentally-preferable coating solutions for the domestic and international markets" said Mr. Nick Travers - Lead Case Verifier for NMP.

What are the benefits of Eco-labelled products?

"The international best practice environmental declaration - Good Environmental Choice Australia - allows both domestic and overseas manufacturers to capture the strong environmental convictions of everyday Australians" said Mr. Petar Johnson, President of Good Environmental Choice - Australia.

"Manufacturers with products of strong environmental performance must be given better access to tender and institutionalised procurement processes as a significant step in the process of continuous environmental improvement in Australia."

"When you have quality products with strong environmental attributes such as the NMP range of protective coatings it is important that the community can recognise them and make purchasing decisions with environmental preference. This is now the common public policy of a large number of government and industry organisations."

The independent verification of the NMP Pty Ltd protective coating products by the Australian Environmental Labelling Association Inc is described in the eco-labelling standard - Architectural Coatings. The voluntary environmental labelling standard is available for public download from: www.aela.org.au/StandardsRegister.htm

Who controls Eco-label Certification?

The Australian Environmental Labelling Association Inc manages the Australian Eco-label Program, and is an independent organisation recognised as the Australian member of an international network of eco-labelling schemes. The organisation is a non-profit organisation with management representation from Australian industry, environmental organisations, scientific and technical professionals and a wide spectrum of stakeholders.

The program is self-declared to ISO 14020 - Third Party Environmental Declaration and Labelling Programs. The program currently has some 60 products certified under this framework. The program is supported by Environment Business Australia - the peak environmental industry organisation in Australia and a wide range of environmental, scientific and government organisations.

Who uses "environmentally-preferred" products?

Below is a list of some of the companies who have used NMP's environmentally-preferred range of protective coatings since the September 2004 Eco-label launch. The list highlights the diversity of industries committed to environmentally-preferred products - from government bodies to exclusive resorts, from industrial laboratories to retail stores. NMP have awarded each company with a certificate recognising their commitment to using "Good Environmental Choice" products.
