Company Beginnings

National Maintenance Products (NMP) Pty Ltd began supplying solventless epoxy technology to the Australian market back in 1997. During this early phase, the majority of products were imported from the US primarily for use within the defence sector. While this structure enabled NMP to survive long enough to prove the technology and gain a strong market understanding, problems quickly surfaced that forced a change in outlook and business strategy.

From a supply perspective, exchange rate fluctuations, duties, delays, manufacturer indifference, no say in quality control and an inability to customise formulations made importation unsustainable in such a competitive market. To be in control of their own destiny, NMP had to change.

Formulation Beginnings

In 2002, NMP began developing their own range of two-pack epoxy products to better cater for the Australian market. With a clean slate in front of them NMP could finally control how product was made and, most importantly, what went into them.

It was of great concern that some modern-day products still contained solvents, carcinogens, heavy metals and other toxins. There had to be a better approach - an approach that realised the full lifecycle of a coating was for 20 years and not just now; one that considered future generations and the impact solvents, carcinogens and toxins could have on their lives and their environment.

With the ability of solventless epoxy coatings already proven and a firm belief that safer products could be made without sacrificing performance, the formulating philosophies and raw material criteria were clear from the outset.

Gradually a full range of industrial coatings, adhesives and specialist maintenance products were put together under the NMP banner. The bulk of these products were made as successors to the original imported range, however a number of products emerged as a result of specialist formulation work performed at the request of other companies.

The Story So Far…

Once a range of maintenance products had been established, it was time to take NMP to other markets. While the defence work had been NMP's cornerstone in the early years, various applications in other fields from time to time showed solventless epoxy technology could have real advantages in traditional coating endeavours. At the forefront of these capabilities was a genuine field-friendliness, punctuated by excellent water and surface tolerance, that allowed the range to fill a niche role in application conditions beyond most of their competitors.

On the back of these strengths, NMP products over the years have successfully been used across the full spectrum of industries, most notably for: seamless, non-slip flooring in commercial kitchens, abattoirs, warehouses, loading bays etc.; chemical-resistant linings in wastewater and other processing facilities; corrosion-resistant coatings on marine and off-shore structures, including splashzone application; and, as underwater-applied repair compounds in municipal tanks.

In 2004, NMP gained recognition and reward for their safer approach by becoming the first industrial manufacturer in Australia to be independently assessed and eco-certified as a "Good Environmental Choice" under ISO 14020. At the beginning of 2011, NMP remained the only two-pack manufacturer to offer a full range of eco-certified products, reinforcing their status as the leader in eco-industrial technology.

The current day sees NMP's range of environmentally responible products segregated and re-branded to reflect their market roles. Jaxxon (industrial coatings) and Scubapox (underwater products) have been in the marketplace for a number of years and represent high-quality products with unique capabilities. Collectively they embody the strengths of NMP - a dynamic, forward-thinking organisation looking to push the boundaries of epoxy technology for the benefit and safety of man and the environment.

The Future…

The origins of NMP have laid excellent foundations for future prosperity. The company views itself as "modern day formulators", holding with tremendous pride its ability to remain dynamic through its history to overcome significant hurdles and establish itself as the leader in innovative epoxy technology.

Having gone through the hardships associated with importing finished product, the future lies in licensing and servicing their technology in larger regional and global markets. With an agreement already in place in Japan and interest from other international companies, exciting times lie ahead in this area.

Also, as NMP believe their greatest strength is the ability to formulate solventless epoxy products to suit market demands, the company will continue to take on specialist formulation work on a contract basis.
